Easter tradition occurs early at VGH Nursing & Rehab

BROWNIE TROUP No. 6081 and the residents of VGH Nursing & Rehab pose for a group photo   VINTON, IA — Girl Scout Brownie Troup No. 6081 received an unexpected treat at the end of their Virginia Gay Hospital tour on Tuesday, March 23. Troup leaders, Tyneal Herger and Krystal Anderson brought the girls to the facility to discover various careers paths as part of a badge they are earning. After the tour, the girls participated in an impromptu Easter Egg Hunt held in the Nursing & Rehab area.

VGH Nursing and Rehab celebrates St. Patrick's Day

Mary Simnacher and Linda Rouse serve Trudy Pribbenow. Everybody’s Irish on St. Paddy’s Day !   Residents of Virginia Gay Nursing and Rehab were treated to their choice of green beer, punch, coffee and cupcakes during the St. Patrick’s Day celebration on March 17. Judy Mehlert tickled the ivory while Elmer and Beverly Stein from Dysart tore up the dance floor. Judy played several Irish ditties and even dug out some oldies like “The Blue Skirt Waltz” and “In the Mood”.

Hibbs do not let handicaps deter them from enjoying wildlife

Mike and Carolyn Hibbs enjoy their outings, despite handicaps.   Once a year or more, someone offers Mike Hibbs a deal in case he decides to sell his land in rural Vinton He always says no. Hibbs bought the place to keep it in its natural condition, as well as for he and his wife, Carolyn to enjoy. He even lets a few other people use the place for camping, fishing and mushroom hunting. Hibbs property has much of what other places along the Cedar River offer: Remote land where there are few signs of civilization, wildlife, peace and quiet, just to name a few.

New Scouts go camping for the first time!

    Each February the WEBLOS scouts of Pack 47 “cross over” to Troop 47 and are welcomed as the newest patrol – The Dragons. Troop 47 camps each and every month with the exception of their annual ski trip in February. March brings the first campout for the troop’s newest scouts, as it did on March 13th-14th.

Trudy Pribbenow to celebrate 100th Birthday at VGH Nursing & Rehab

Trudy Pribbenow, age 100, sits with daughter Nancy Scott. Trudy Pribbenow, a resident of Virginia Gay Nursing & Rehab Center, will celebrate her 100th birthday with a party at  2 p.m. Friday, March 19. Trudy was a kindergarten teacher until she married her husband, Benny. She said she lived a "common life," raising three daughters, Darlene, Darlys and Nancy, all of whom also became teachers.

Central Lutheran shares part of its $100,000 gift with a dozen missions

Central Lutheran celebrated its $100K gift by sharing $10K.   “The US Cellular coverage area has gone global, and they didn’t have to construct a tower, launch a satellite or open up stores across seas. Talk about a ripple effect…” said Central Lutheran School Principal Jan Doellinger. The principal was announcing the fact that the school’s students had chosen to share 10 percent of their U.

Area leaders speak to Faith Baptist Church congregation during 'Friend Day'

Area leaders visited Faith Baptist Church for Friend Day.            Faith Baptist Church invited several local leaders and others to its Friend Day on Sunday, March 14. Senator Charles Grassley spoke to the adult in Sunday School, and he and several local leaders briefly addressed the congregation during its church service. Pastor Greg Collins and his wife, Cara, organized the event.
